Girona

Girona, in the Spanish Pyrenees, was Lance Armstrong’s base in the 90s, and for good reason. It’s a dream destination for cyclists with endless routes and a third of the region made up of protected areas. The untamed Cap de Creus National Park, north of Girona, shows the region’s dramatic coastline at its wildest, passing the whitewashed fishing village of Cadaques and on to the lighthouse at Cap de Creus – Spain’s most eastern point. Experienced cyclists have some long sustained climbs of 10 km (6 miles) or more.

On the move

Spin your compass and take your pick. The Costa Brava cycling routes and coastline are about 30km away to the east, the Les Gaverres mountains are to the south and the Pyrenean border with France is to the north.

Staying still

If all of that sounds somewhat surreal, then that’s appropriate because just north of Girona is the town of Figueres where Salvador Dali lived and where you can now find a museum, with a facade of giant eggs, dedicated to his work.
